EMPLOYEE SATISFACTION AND JOB PERFORMANCE: A CASE OF OPERATIONAL DEPARTMENT, NAIROBI COUNTY GOVERNMENT, KENYA

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The study aimed to examine the employee satisfaction and job performance in the operational department in Nairobi County government.

Problem Statement: Nairobi county government has been having issues with the satisfaction of the employees working in all the departments in the County. Moreover, Mmbusa and Kiiru (2019) established that the county government had not improved the employee satisfaction and there are rampant corruption cases taking place in the county government due to low and delayed payments that have cost some of the projects to get stalled because of rampant of strikes.

Study Methodology: The researcher adopted the descriptive research design. The design was deemed fit for the study as it had the advantage of exploring the effect of employee satisfaction on job performance and thereby revealing summarized statistics by showing responses to all possible questionnaire items that lead to identifying needed changes. Further, the targeted population was 381 employees working from operational Department in Nairobi County Government and the sample size utilized in the study was 190s

Results of the study:  The study established a positive and significant relationship between employee satisfaction and job performance.

Conclusion: The study concluded that employee recognition, employee professional advancement, employee achievement and employee work environment were positively and significant related to the job performance and therefore became satisfactory determinants of job performance in the operational department in Nairobi County government.

Recommendations: The study recommended bonuses, promotion, salary revisions, rewards are good ways of enhancing the job satisfaction among the employees Also, management in the operational department to invest in providing employees with professional advancement which is relevant to their job. Additionally, the study recommended operational department to involve the employees in making decisions and also the employees to be given the freedom of autonomy in decision making. Finally, the study recommended operational department to take initiatives to motivate employees by improving their work environment.
